Saxon's Fine Jewelers Gospel N' Brunch Sunday

Cameron Clark of C3 Events visited a Hollywood, Calif., jazz festival with Ron Henderson, owner of Saxon’s Fine Jewelers, and the pair happened upon a bit of inspiration. The House of Blues featured a Sunday brunch that included the soulful sounds of gospel performers. “It was awe-inspiring,” Clark said. So Clark decided to bring a similar event to Bend during the Bank of the Cascades Bend Summer Festival.

A brunch buffet, provided by Country Catering, will be served at 11 am on Sunday, July 13th. “Gospel is an art form,” said Clark. “We’re hoping that the church community will see this and, after church on Sunday, will come down for brunch and to enjoy some gospel music.”

Tickets for the brunch will be on sale at Saxon's Fine Jewelers in advance, as well as on-site on the event day.

The Musical Artists:

Gospel Choir of the Cascades

The Gospel Choir of the Cascades began in April of 2007 with just twelve singers, and has grown by leaps and bounds to include over 40 amazing singers and a full band. Director Julie Wheeler, a former member of the University of Oregon Gospel Choir, had been yearning since her college experience to be in a big gospel choir again, so she decided to create one herself. Almost all of the choir’s music has been written or arranged by Julie, and the songs are tailored to fit the group. They have a recently recorded CD titled “Oh Happy Day!” It was professionally recorded by Andy Armor, who is also the organist in the band. You are really in for a treat if you go see the group of fine musicians. Please get ready to rock, move, dance, clap and sing…it’s the Gospel Choir of the Cascades!

Total Experience Gospel Choir

The Total Experience Gospel Choir was organized in September 1973 at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Seattle. The core group represented members of the “Black Experience Gospel Choir” of Roosevelt High School and the Franklin High School Gospel Choir of Seattle. United, the choir became known as “Total Experience Gospel Choir”. When the choirs merged, the community’s children were also invited to participate. And, participate – they did! The choir’s numbers grew to 108 within the first two months, with the youngest person being 8 years old. Today the choir’s ages range from 6 to 65. Since their inception, MUCH history has taken place. The choir has become known nationally and internationally. Their travels have taken them to 36 contiguous states as well as Hawaii and Alaska – for a total of 38 states. They have performed on 5 continents and in 28 countries.

The Gospel of Janice Scroggins and Friends

Described by Paul DeLay as the finest musician in Portland, Janice Scroggins is one of the most in-demand pianists in the Northwest today. She was born in 1955 in Idabel, Oklahoma and began performing as a pianist at the age of 3. Her mother and grandmother both played piano or organ in church and Janice credits her grandmother with influencing her current playing technique. She views music as a form of prayer, meditation, healing, and a very natural part of every day life. Throughout her musical career, she has played with many notable Northwest musicians, including Lloyd Jones, Curtis Salgado, Norman Sylvester, and West African drummer Obo Addy. As well, she has been recognized with the “Best Keyboards” designation at the Muddy (Waters) Awards (1989, 1990, 1991, 1996, 1998, 1999, and 2001). In 1991, Janice was inducted into the Cascade Blues Association’s Hall of Fame for “Best Keyboards.” Janice’s performance at the festival will feature some of her favorite Gospel singers from the greater Portland area.
